Slovak director Dominik Bari continues to build his reputation in the European film scene with the success of his latest documentary, The Car Gangs. Released across 24 countries through HBO, the film has earned a strong response from audiences, particularly in the growing true crime genre.
The Car Gangs offers a detailed look into the organized networks behind car theft in Central Europe, presenting the story from three distinct perspectives: the criminals, the victims, and the investigators. With its authentic portrayal of real cases and strong visual style, the documentary reflects Bari’s background in travel and exploratory filmmaking while stepping into the increasingly popular true crime territory.
Since its launch, The Car Gangs has performed notably well on HBO Max, entering the Top 10 most-watched titles in several countries according to data from FlixPatrol. Among them are Spain, Norway, and the Netherlands, with the documentary also attracting massive attention in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Denmark.

Reflecting on the film’s broader significance, Bari explained: “It’s a topic that can affect anyone. We wanted the film to also work as a form of prevention. That’s why we worked closely with the police during the production process.“
By blending striking cinematography with grounded storytelling, Bari successfully adapts his visual filmmaking strengths to the true crime format, contributing to the documentary’s growing appeal across diverse audiences. The Car Gangs demonstrates not only the global appetite for well-crafted true crime stories but also the evolving international reach of Central European documentary filmmakers.
